Creating a part adds a new part to your system with largely blank properties to be filled in at your convenience. This operation can create both Corporate and site parts, depending on your site and its settings:
● Corporate users can create only Corporate parts.
● Local site users can create Corporate and/or site parts, depending on the Parts Master setting at the site. This setting determines whether users at the site have access to site parts only, Corporate parts only, or both.
While creating a new part, you can enter the following properties for it:
● Corporate Part / Site Part: Determines whether the new part is a Corporate part or a local site part. (Option available only to local site users with access to both Corporate and site parts.)
● Part Number: The unique identifying number of the new part. Whether you enter this property depends on whether the site selected in the previous property (the Corporate site or your local site; see previous) has a defined part number mask (see Site Settings):
● Site has a defined part number mask: You cannot enter the new part number, which will be automatically generated according to the part number mask and issued when the new part is saved.
● Site does not have a defined part number mask: You will enter the new part number.
● Product Name: The product name of the new part.
● Description: Any additional description of the new part.
● Manufacturer: The company who manufactures this product. Enter the company name manually or select one from the manufacturer index using the browse (...) button.
● Primary Unit of Measure: The unit by which this part's quantities are most often measured.
● Inactive: Select to begin the new part as an inactive part. Clear to begin the new part as an active part.
When the new part is created, it is issued a part number and you are directed immediately to its Components page (see Part Components), where you can define its physical/chemical components.
Note: To create a new part with properties similar to an existing part, consider cloning that existing part instead. For details, see Cloning a Part.
To create a part:
Starting at the Part Search Center (How do I get there?), do the following:
1. Click New Part at the right side of the display.
The Create New Part page opens.
2. Select whether this new part will be a Corporate Part or a local Site Part. (This option is not available to Corporate users, who can create Corporate parts only.)
If the site selected (Corporate or of your local site) has a defined part number mask, this mask is shown in parentheses below Part Number. This indicates the format of the part number that will be issued to this new part upon creation.
3. Enter the remaining part properties. (See above for details on each.)
4. Click Save.
The new part is saved and issued a part number. (By default, this is the alphanumerically highest existing part number that matches the appropriate part number mask, incremented by one.) You are directed to the new part's Components page, where you can define its components. Continue at step 1 of the procedure in Defining a Part's Components.
